Style Resolutions for 2013

It’s that time again.  The beginning of a New Year, (okay its a few days past but whose counting), brings in feelings of optimism and hope for great things to come.   It truly is an exciting time.  So, while we’re creating our life“to do” lists, and posting up vision boards of our world takeover, why not add a few style resolutions to the mix?  There's no better time to improve how we present ourselves to the world.

My 2012 resolution list was solid and remains in effect for this year, but in the spirit of self improvement, I've have assembled a new list for 2013.  Here goes…

1) Wear More Dresses- I’ve made this one before, and didn’t quite master it as I’d planned. If I can accomplish this one, I could almost forget the rest. I am a diehard pants lovin' girl. And jeans? I think they should become part of the national wardrobe. Outside of church, weddings or special events, my acquaintance with skirts and dresses is rare. And, it’s not that I don’t like them; on the contrary. I think the right dress can absolutely can work wonders. I have a few that I'm quite fond of. I just want to have legs like JLo before I go all in. Is that so wrong? And pants are just so, well, easy. Nonetheless, I will conquer my apprehension/ laziness and get myself into a few more dresses this year.

2) Don't be afraid to think outside of the box- Yes. This made my 2002 resolution list and it’s back again. I mean, can you ever really stretch yourself too much? In every other facet of life, we constantly seek to grow and try new things, why not in fashion? Fashion is an expression of one’s self, and like it or not our clothing conveys a message about us. Why shouldn't that message be that I’m not only stylish, but interesting and creative.

3) Rock More Heels - Another work in progress. I love heels. Really I do. I also love comfort. Unfortunately, oft times the two don’t intersect. Thus when I'm feeling lazy, I'll forego that pair of heels in my closet and opt for a flat. At 5’2’’, this is no bueno. For as much as flats have been all the rage over the last couple of years, nothing brings the sexy like a good heel. Nope. Nothing. Tell the truth. Do you ever really feel all Sasha Fierce in a pair of flats? Not likely. And if you're petite: Uuum, no. Heels help straighten your posture, and improve your stride. I will commit to breaking them out more often, and finding the most stylish and comfortable heels possible.

4) Remember, as former Chicago radio personality Drex used to say, “Fabulous is a Full Time Job”. You heard it. The truth is it takes a little work to be fabulous. It's generally not by accident. Celebs spend good money to get that effortless, "oh I just threw this together and came out flawless look", when the truth is it takes a village. Obviously, as everyday people we don't have a glam squad, or that kind of time; but with a little effort, planning and organization, we can make our style work without spending a ton of time thinking about it. (Closet editing, accessories organized, etc.). This little mantra helps me when I feel lazy and unmotivated to put my best foot forward whether in fashion, or in life.

5). Have Fun- This may seem like a contradiction in light of item 4, but fashion and personal styling should be fun. It's not a matter of life and death. Have a bad day? Get up and slay the masses tomorrow.

What about you? What style resolution do you have for the New Year?

  1. My style resolution is to try and give a #@+/: about style on Monday through Friday when I'm going to work....where I'm sitting most of the day and my 'runway' time is 2 to 3 seconds walking to the printer every hour...... I'm just sayin'.... This is what it is.... I can work on this though....

  2. Lol, Liz. I can definitely understand the lack of motivation sometimes at work. Baby steps. Maybe you commit to a couple of days a week of "runway" looks and take it from there.
    Thanks for commenting.

  3. Okay Ladies...I know work is not the best place to rock one's best, but I have been allowing my telework lazy and somewhat sloppy look to go into the rest of my work week at the office! Yikes!!! I know, that will not help my singleness but my goal is to put more effort...we'll see how it goes...

  4. Awilda,
Its definitely easy to get let the wardrobe slide when you're used to telework. Lucky you, BTW. Singleness aside, Good luck on your goal. Just like anything its a day at a time. LOL.

  5. These were right on!!! My one and only mantra this year is to be drawn to more people and things that "add" to my life. If you haven't noticed, majority of times when this happens you are feeling, vibing and looking your very best! Take a look at JLo these days---she is not short of confidence! Just a little effort goes a very long way...be fabulous! Shon
