Hello all,
You may have
noticed that I’ve been gone for a minute.
Just one
short month ago we thankfully, welcomed another year. I personally entered 2013 with more “New
Year’s” optimism than usual. The
Obama-esque message of hope and change were more than just a slogan for
me. And I’m not talking politically, but
in life in general. Unfortunately within
that short period of time, several life events had effectively popped my
balloon of excitement. Instead of
feeling inspired by fashion, I’ll just say me and my TV remote, Sade, Phyllis
Hyman, Stevie Wonder and Rihanna have been well acquainted. (I know Rihanna doesn’t seem to mix with this
group, but trust me it works). But I
know it’s now time to get off my hind parts, and trade in those ballads for some
hustler anthems . Anyone for a little
Rick Ross? (Well, maybe Rickey Rozay
isn’t the best example this week, but I digress). I’m back y’all and please forgive this long
post. It has been 3 weeks.
Did you see
last night’s Scandal? YES! IT WAS
EVERYTHING!!! EVERY. SINGLE. THING.
In case you
can’t tell, I am a serious Scandal fan; a Gladiator if you will. (That’s the nickname or the main character’s
team, and Scandal’s devoted Twitter followers).
Whether it’s the brilliantly written script, the superb casting, or the
way I’m emotionally spent and needing a cigarette afterwards (I don’t really
smoke), I’m here for ALL of it. I am
especially here for the talented Kerry Washington and her character Olivia
Pope: fierce, fabulous and fashionable as hell.
Can we talk about the Ms. Pope’s
wardrobe? No matter the situation,
Olivia Pope brings her sartorial A-game. Here are 4 style lessons we can take from
the Olivia Pope playbook:
1) Say Yes to Lighter Hues- Week after week, Olivia Pope proves that charcoal greys and
basic blacks are not the only route to a professional look. Ditching the status quo, Pope’s penchant for
earth tones, pastels and light greys really capture our attention. Her look is always crisp and polished; strong
yet feminine.
2) Casual dress can be chic (and sexy) - Pope’s transition from work to weekend is always seamless. Even during her off hours, Pope is always pulled together. Plush sweaters, capelet coats, a fabulous
pair of boats, and a classic handbag are part of Pope’s off duty go-to arsenal.
Nobody does casual like Olivia
Pope. And of course, the tailoring is
perfect.

3) A killer trench coat is a must! Don’t underestimate
the importance of outerwear my friends.
The right trench coat provides the piece de resistance to any
ensemble. Worn in bright hues, a trench
can add a needed pop of whimsy; worn monochromatically it can convey elegance
and sophistication. And since the trench coat is timeless, it's a great investment.
4) By all means, Accessorize- Accessories are key in upgrading any outfit and Olivia Pope
works hers like a charm. Whether she’s
adorning silk blouses with her signature long chained necklaces or working a
fabulous pair of opera gloves, Ms Pope knows how to make a statement.
What about you? Do you watch
Scandal? Are you a fan of Olivia
Pope's style?

Hey Maven
ReplyDeleteI actually like Olivia Pope's style very much. I have only recently learned that some people really, REALLY hate her style. Her clothes have been referred to as ill-fitting and boring. Well call me boring but I have been enjoying her outfits!

Hey PJD,.
ReplyDeleteI've actually never heard people who hate her style. Interesting. It's definitely a different perspective. Different strokes. I think she looks great.
I am a fan of Olivia as well! She wears the hell out of her clothes. They always seem to fit her mood well too.
